‘First Day at Work’ by Debasis (DB) Bhaumik Launches, Igniting Dialogue on societal
patterns and balance between pattern and progress. Are we really making progress
or are societal patterns holding us back?

Staff Reporter : Kolkata, 12th. July, 2025 – Author Debasis (DB) Bhaumik today launched his fourth book -’’First Day at Work,’ at Oxford Bookstore, Park Street, an event that saw him join virtually from his residence in Canada. The book offers a profound look into the life of an Indian woman, who was born in India a month before India’s independence and her journey over almost eight decades – her relentless efforts to fight the norm, her submissions, her acceptances and her wins.
Bhaumik emphasized that Uma represents countless women globally who have
defied norms and forged new paths. “Patterns are needed and are important
because that forms society and societal norms. Patterns help us form habits. But all
patterns come with an expiry date beyond which a pattern becomes a rigidity” stated
Bhaumik during his virtual address. The narrative urges readers to question whether
true societal progress is being made and when we have to challenge a pattern to
enable change.
The launch featured insights from prominent personalities, including independent filmmaker and writer Debarati Gupta, renowned artist Bijoylakshmi Barman, and award-winning poet and scholar Samragnee Bandyopadhyay. Each speaker underscored the book’s timely exploration of empowerment and the conflicts between societal patterns and progress. This significant literary event provided a platform for crucial dialogue on societal norms, relentless efforts to fight the norms and what drives change as a society
