Twin happiness for a Medical Professional who underwent Spine Deformity Correction, a day after NEET PG Result….

Staff Reporter : Kolkata 18 September 2025: A medical professional from Kolkata with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis was successfully treated through corrective surgery at *Manipal Hospital Dhakuria. The surgery enabled 30-year-old Riya (name changed) to mobilize without pain post-surgery, who had cleared her NEET PG Exam with flying colours on her operative day and is all set to restart her studies. The procedure was done under expert team led by Dr. Subhadip Mandal, Spine Surgeon, Dr. Prakhar Gyanesh, Anaesthetic and Dr. Santoshri Malakar, Assistant Surgeon.

Riya, a medical professional was suffering with lower back pain for over 6-months now and was having a prominent Loin (the sides between lower ribs and pelvis and the lower part of the back) hump on (L) side. It made her daily life miserable since she was not able to sit or even sleep properly. It was equally affecting her professional life owing to pain and discomfort. Her X-ray showed Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) with late presentation showing a prominent Thoraco Lumbar Curve and a compensatory Thoracic Curve.
Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis is caused by abnormal curvature of the spine that may not show any signs in childhood and is frequently diagnosed in adulthood. The condition often leads to regular pain, discomfort and affects the psychological appearance.

Dr Subhadip Mandal, Spine Surgeon, stated, ”It was a great moment for us as Riya was happy to know that she had cleared her NEET PG and this gave her the strength to undergo the procedure on that same day. She was cooperative and we performed the corrective surgery through Pedicle screw instrumentation followed by Osteotomies and Rod Rotation manoeuvres under GA with Intra operative Neuro monitoring. These conditions often affects the appearance of a person and lowers the confidence. But post the cosmetic surgery, Riya is able to mobilize with a fabulous cosmetic correction from scoliosis and without pain, on the very next day.”

Riya who is awaiting her counselling said, “I have been facing this problem for 10 years now but the last 3 months were miserable. I started facing difficulty in standing for a long time due the hump developed at my back. When I visited Manipal Hospital, i was advised for the corrective surgery and I am fine now. Few simple exercise have been advised by Dr Shubadip Mondal, who did the procedure.”

Mr Dilip Roy, Director Manipal Hospital Dhakuria, said, “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Riya for coming up with flying colors in her NEET PG Exams. She will soon be joining her PG course. On her health front, I believe that the diligent team of doctors at the hospital have done their best to help the student regain her normal life through the cosmetic surgery. We at Manipal Hospital look forward to provide the best of medical care and treatment.”
